Included
among the numerous honors and awards Russell Banks has
received are the Ingram Merrill Award, the John Dos Passos
Award, and the Literature Award from the American Academy
of Arts and Letters. A prolific writer of fiction, Russell
Banks’ titles include: Cloudsplitter, Searching
for Survivors, Family Life, Hamilton Stark, The New World,
The Book of Jamaica, Trailerpark, The Relation of My Imprisonment,
Continental Drift, Success Stories and Rule of
the Bone. Mr. Banks’ work The Angel on the
Roof is a collection of thirty years of his short
fiction.
Two
of his novels, Affliction and The Sweet Hereafter,
were adapted into feature films that received widespread
critical acclaim. Russell Banks’ most recent work
is the novel entitled The Darling (selected by The
New York Times Book Review as one of the 10 Notable
Books of 2004). Set in late 20th-century Liberia, the work
spans topics of civil and political upheaval and strained
loyalties to country and family. Russell Banks is one of
the founders of the City of Refuge programs both in Europe
and in North America.
